Wednesday 23rd January, 2008: Archbishop Gilmartin and the Emerging Irish Free State - Castlebar Library

Fr. Kiernan Waldron, Parish Priest of Killererin, Tuam, will give a lecture on one of the sixteen archbishops whose lives he has studied, Archbishop T. P. Gilmartin (1918-39).

Thursday 24th January, 2008: Launch of the Colombia Jail Journal by James Monaghan - Castlebar Library

James Monaghan has recently published his account of his time as a prisoner in the Colombian jail system. His book, entitled Colombia Jail Journal will be launched in Castlebar library with the author in attendance

March 7th - 19th 2008. : Bad Winds - A photographic exhibition of the effects of the Louisiana Hurricanes in 2006 - Ballina Library

Bad Winds is an exhibition of 30 photographs conveying imagery of the effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2006 in rural Louisiana

February 4th - March 1st 2008. : Burma - Forgotten Nation, Forgotten People: exhibition of photographs by Burma Action Ireland - Ballina Library

An exhibition of 40 photographs taken by Cork photographer Philip Daly and toured in Ireland by Burma Action Ireland in support of the people of Burma.

March 7th 2008.: The Big Melt: The phenomena of global warming and the implications for Ireland - Ballina Library

As part of the launch of the 'Bad Winds' photography Exhibition, Andy Wilson, editor of Sustainability Journal will give a presentation on the phenomena of global warming and the implications for Ireland. The presentation will be followed by an open debate in which the audience will have an opportunity to express their views.

Thursday 13th March: Sean Kelly Presents 'Rule 42 and All That' - Castlebar Library

As part of the celebration of Seachtain na Gaeilge Castlebar Library is delighted to welcome author and sportsman Sean Kelly to the library to talk about his book 'Rule 42 and All That'.

Eilís Nic Dhonncha presents Blas Drámaíocht Fisicúil, a high energy fun workshop full of enjoyment which particularly works on developing creativity, group work and listening skills.

Wed 12th March: Ceol agus Fáilte: 20 years of Broadcasting in Midwest Radio. - Castlebar Library

Joe Byrne of Midwest Radio will present an evening of music, songs and stories from County Mayo.

March 13th.: Traditional Night in Ballina with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Maigh Eo - Ballina Library

To celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge & for a great way to start off St. Patrick’s week-end, why not visit Ballina Library which will be alive to the sounds of traditional music, song, dance, drama and craic on Thursday 13th March as the library is delighted to welcome members of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Maigh Eo as they perform for the public.

Wed. 26th March, 2008: Illustrated talk on the OSI new online Historical Mapping Service - Castlebar Library

The Ordnance Survey of Ireland has introduced an online service Ireland’s Historical Mapping Archive which provides access to a collection of maps which will be of great interest to local historians, schools and the general public. Kevin Brady of the Ordnance Survey will give an illustrated talk on the service in Castlebar Library.

July - August 2008: Solve a Mystery this Summer - Ballyhaunis Library

Want to Solve a Mystery this Summer?

If you are aged between 6 - 16 years and enjoy reading, come in to Ballyhaunis Library and sign up for our Summer Reading Club.  This year's theme is 'Mystery'.  

Throughout the months of July and August, children will be asked to read 10 books by 10 different authors - and all the books will be mysteries. 

Thursday July 24th, 2008: Spring Onion Theatre presents Androcles and The Lion - Crossmolina Public Library

A puppet theatre performance that has delighted family audiences in Ireland and abroad comes to Crossmolina Public Library for 2 performances only.

February 25th 2008.: Information evening on Ballina’s newest residents, the Karen-Burmese Refugees - Ballina Library

An information evening will be held in Ballina Library about the Karen- Burmese refugees who have recently come to live in the area and on how the local community can help. Speakers will include Gerry Mulherin, a refugee support worker with Meitheal Mhaigh Eo and a number of the Karen refugees will speak on their lives in Burma and about adjusting to life in Ireland.

19th Sept., 2007: Readings by Argentinian Writers Gerardo Gambolini & Jorge Fondebrider - Castlebar Library

Mayo County Council Arts Office and Mayo County Library are delighted to present a double-reading by Argentinian writers Gerardo Gambolini and Jorge Fondebrider. This is once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear two giants of contemporary South American literature read in the centre of Castlebar.

EDGE '08 : Quiet Riot – Punk Verse: from New Wave to oblivion

The spirit of punk rock will be alive and well in Ballina this month with EDGE '08 Quiet Riot, a week-long literary event celebrating the influence the movement has had on literature and writing in this country. Ballina Arts Centre in association with Mayo County Library Services, will present ‘EDGE08: Quiet Riot – Punk Verse: from New Wave to oblivion Monday 10th – Thursday 13th September.

Ready, Set, Bio! a series of workshops targeted at fifth and sixth class introduces a hands on approach to teaching science in the classroom.

Monday 20th October - Friday 21st November, 2008.: The Biggest Book in County Mayo - Ballyhaunis Library

The Biggest Book in the county on display in Ballyhaunis Library?   As part of Mayo County Library Children's Book Fesitval 2008 , 26 children attempted to make the biggest book in the county.

4th November 2008.: Focus on Forces - Castlebar Library

Focus on Forces is a workshop which is part of the RDS Science Live Series. It will be delivered by Christine Campbell, Anyone4Science, as part of Science Week in Castlebar library.

27th November 2008. : Art Sale in aid of Suicide Awareness - Ballina Library

Choose Life, Reach Out, a suicide awareness & mental forum, are hosting an art sale to raise funds for their work. Paintings have been donated by professional and amateur artists who wish to help out this worthy fundraiser and Harry Feeney of TG4's  'Relax with Watercolours' will paint a picture as part of the proceedings on the night.
