Mayo Co. Library is privileged to be the recipient of a collection of Irish poems, 47 in total, written in the early 1900’s by a man called John Gibbons (1865-1930’s), who immigrated to New York at the age of 16 where he had a career as a police Officer for 40 years.  John came from Hazelrock, Ayle, Westport and these poems which were handed down to his family, were kindly donated to Mayo Co. Library by his niece Annie King.

Irish wasn’t taught in Primary School when John attended Killawalla N. S.  A friend from Connemara in the U.S.A. told him that he wasn’t a true Irishman when he couldn’t speak the Irish Language, so he joined the Gaelic League and became a fluent Irish speaker, an achievement of which he was very proud.

A sample of the collection may be viewed over the next two weeks as part of the  ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’ exhibition at Mayo Co. Library, Castlebar.
