Ireland has a long radio and communications tradition and Irish people love radio. Since 2003, Martello Tower no. 2 in Howth, Co. Dublin, is home to the Hurdy Gurdy Museum of Vintage Radio. Mayo born Pat Herbert, its curator and collector, houses there all manner of artefacts, relating to the history of communication, but radio in particular. As a non-profit endeavour, Pat relies heavily on a steady band of radio enthusiasts to maintain the museum and keep it open to the public.

Ballina Library is thrilled that Pat has chosen to bring a selection of his vast collection of radios, gramophones and other radio-related paraphernalia to the library during Salmon Festival Week. Pat and members from the Irish Vintage Radio and Sound Society will be on-hand in the library to answer questions about the collection on show and Ireland’s communications history.  There will also be amateur radio or ‘ham’ radio broadcasts from the library over the 2 days. Please come along to the library and have a look at this fascinating insight into our radio tradition.

All welcome. Further details from Ballina Library
