Uncover the story of the landscape around you at this Talk on Placenames with Fiachra MacGabhann. There are over 60,000 townlands in Ireland and over 3,000 of those are in Mayo, divided into 72 parishes. Placenames are an important archive of the county itself, that gives us an insight into the language, personal names, surnames, settlement paterns, ecclesiastical history and archaeology of an area.
A new study based on the analysis of important historical sources, has been completed on the names of all of Mayo's townlands. This talk will be based on this study - the regions of the county and their names, the age of placenames, the importance of sources, common and uncommon elements. The talk will focus on local placenames.
Fáilte roimh gach éinne, especially those who have questions about placenames in or near their own townland.
Coiste Logainmneacha Mhaigh Eo are grateful to Togra Mhaigh Eo and Conradh na Gaeilge for funding this lecture.
