Instrument Lending

An initiative between Music Generation Mayo* and Mayo County Library provides musical instruments for loan to young library members (up to the age of 18) for a period of six months at a time –the aim is to allow children to try out the instrument of their choice without having to pay full price for it!

How to borrow an instrument:

  • See the full list of instruments here

  • Contact Castlebar, Ballina or Belmullet Library to see if the instrument is still available

  • Complete a rental agreement signed by the borrower and parents/guardians in the library

  • Pay a deposit which is refundable if the instrument is returned in good condition

  • Pay the fee for six months rental

  • Borrowers must be accompanied by aparent /guardian in order to borrow an instrument

*Music Generation Mayo is a music education service for children and young people (0-18) in Mayo and is part of Music Generation Ireland's National Music Education Programme, initiated by Music Network and funded by U2 and The Ireland Funds. Locally, Music Generation Mayo is managed and co-funded by Mayo’s Music Education Partnership (MEP). This inter-agency partnership is comprised of the following organisations: Mayo County Council Arts Office, Mayo County Community Forum, Mayo V.E.C., Mayo County Development Board, Mayo Education Centre and Mayo County Council Dept. of Community and Integrated Development.

Instrument Lending Banks


  • Ballina Instrument Bank

    This bank serves the North Mayo area and lending commenced in September 2014.  The scheme is also administered by Mayo County Library and the instruments are housed in Ballina Civic Offices.

  • Castlebar Instrument Bank

    The first instrument bank is housed in Mayo County Library headquarters in Castlebar and lending commenced in May 2013. Instruments from this bank can be borrowed by young people (0-18) in the South West Mayo Leader area for a period of 6 months with an option to renew if there is not a waiting list for the instrument.

  • Erris Instrument Bank

    This bank serves the Erris area and is housed in the Civic Centre in Belmullet and is also administered by Mayo County Library.
