To start using our latest map system (MapBrowser 3.0, requires Flash Player) with its standard opening screen please click on the screenshot on the left or click here.
Display configurations of (base)map, overlay, features, zoom & position can be bookmarked and linked to using the address bar content. Most map screenshots on this page have been linked to the map system this way. Click on them and the map system with the shown configuration will open in a new window/tab. (Additional steps might be necessary to completely reproduce the display). |

Video tutorials for our latest map system (MapBrowser 3.0) are currently being prepared.
MapBrowsers

MapBrowser 3.0
Based on Flash Player and Esri's ArcGIS API for Flash. Launched in 2015 as replacement for MapBrowser 2.0, which basically had been of the same design and Google Maps based. |
|
![]() |
MapBrowser 1.0
Based on Flash Player. Launched in 2009. We recommend using MapBrowser 3.0. This page is nearly completely dedicated to the latter. MapBrowser 1.0 doesn't show modern maps or overlay historic maps. It works more like an image viewer than a GIS. However, for exactly that reason it allows the presentation of additonal material from the Lynch-Blosse Estate missing in MapBrowser 3.0. If such material exists for a map feature in MapBrowser 3.0, you should find a link to MapBrowser 1.0 in the Additional maps folder. |
Modern Maps
All modern maps are only available as so-called "basemaps". A basemap is the base/background for all other layers, be it overlays or feature layers. Select a basemap with the map drop down list in the panel above the map display.

Road Maps
Available as basemaps. Road Map by OpenStreetMap (shows details like The Greenway) |

Satellite Imagery
Available as basemaps. |
|

Miscellaneous Modern Maps
Available as basemaps. Outdoor Map by Thunderforest (using OpenStreetMap & NASA data, with elevation lines) |
Historic Maps
Historic maps are available as basemaps and/or overlays as stated below. Select a basemap with the map and an overlay with the overlay drop down list. Both can be found in the panel above the map display. Overlays are only visible in a limited zoom range. Their transparency/opacity can be changed with the slider beside the overlay drop down list.

Lynch-Blosse Estate maps 1811-1858
103 maps of individual townlands or of small groups of townlands in the baronies of Clanmaurice and Carra. Available in MapBrowser 3.0 as overlays. To access, zoom in as close as possible on your area of interest. Then open the overlay drop down list and look at entries under "- details on townland level". The overlay drop down list always only shows overlays relevant for the current display area. 1830 map of Ballygarry townland in Carra barony over Satellite Image 1811 map of Aghareville townland in Clanmorris barony over Satellite Image |

Additonal tenants list for the Lynch-Blosse Estate maps
All Lynch-Blosse Estate maps can also be viewed in MapBrowser 1.0. In some sheets you'll find numbers which are explained on accompanying reference sheets, including details of occupying tenants. MapBrowser 3.0 can't show these sheets but MapBrowser 1.0 can. In such cases MapBrowser 3.0 offers a link from map features to MapBrowser 1.0 in the Additional maps folder. Please make sure that in MapBrowser 1.0 the Map Legend Window is visible (button no. 10 in the control bar) and the Ref. Sheet tab selected. If required, reposition and resize the Map Legend Window. |

Additonal 18th century maps from the Lynch-Blosse collection
The Lynch-Blosse collection also includes 18th century maps from the Garret Moore Estate for counties Mayo and Offaly. They can only be looked at in MapBrowser 1.0. MapBrowser 3.0 offers map feature links to them via the panel on the right hand side, Links tab, Additional maps folder. Feature Layers
Feature layers in MapBrowser 3.0 are controlled with the Features tab in the panel on the left hand side. In some cases a feature layer can be broken down into subsets by clicking on the arrow before the feature layer's name. Once activated, a feature layer's zoom range, opacity and - if applicable - style/color are displayed below the features list, allowing you to make changes. When you select one of these places or areas on the map the feature's data will be displayed in the panel on the right hand side.

Places Feature Layers
Please try the following selection and configuration examples: Castles in county Mayo (Monuments subset) Knock parish (Townlands places and Townlands by Civil Parishes areas subsets, areas 40% opacity, color changed to light blue) |

Feature Linked Resources
Map links to external resources and data on our website are available for selected feature layers. In MapBrowser 3.0 (our latest map system) activate the respective feature layer(s), click on a map feature and look in the panel on the right hand side for entries in the Links tab.

Location Search
There are two ways to look for an location in MapBrowser 3.0: in the panel on the left hand side with the Browse tab, and in the panel on the right hand side with the Related Places tab.

Search with the Browse tab
|
|
![]() |
Search with the Related Places tab If you know, for example, that a townland belongs to a parish then you can use the Related Places tab in the panel on the right hand side to quickly move from a selected townland place feature to a parish feature and vice versa. |
|
![]() |
By default, selecting a search result changes the map display. If you want to keep it choose a different option at the end of above mentioned tabs. |
|

You might also find useful the "show whole county", "go back" and "remove result marker" buttons above the map. |
Genealogical Research
Besides offering you maps, the map system can support your genealogical research in three ways:
- Through feature links to the 1901 Census and 1855/1856 Griffiths Valuation.
- Through a parallel listing of 1901 Census data in the 1901 Census tab, courtesy of the Letrim-Roscommon website.
- Through Surname Mapping of the 1901 Census "Head of Households" and 1855/1856 Griffiths Valuation data.
