Local Studies Projects
The Emigration Project:
The EMILE project, which was funded by the European Union, aims to compare and contrast the experiences of Èuropean emigrants to America by analysing the letters they sent home. Participants in the project include museums and libraries in Sweden, Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic with Mayo County Library representing Ireland. The project has produced A Touring Exhibition and Catalogue in five languages (currently on display in Mayo Library), a CD of songs of emigration from the five countries, a display of books compiled by Mayo Library on emigration to America and finally a Virtual Exhibition in English, the EMILE website (external link: opens new window). The website has the same focus as the touring exhibitions but is more detailed and is especially designed to attract young people and immigrants in Europe today.
Cultural Heritage Project:
The Ask About Ireland Cultural Heritage Project is managed by An Chomhairle Leabharlanna (The Library Council of Ireland) and funded by the Department of the Environment and Local Government. It focuses on the digitisation and provision of new modes of access to cultural heritage material in libraries, archives and museums. The purpose of the project is to enable public libraries, archives and museums to provide access on-line for citizens to their cultural holdings and to relevant local content.
