Adobe SVG-Viewer Installation
Introduction
The Adobe SVG-Viewer is only required for the 1838 Ordnance Survey Map application. It was developed for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5+ under Windows 98 - XP and can't be opened with any other webbrowser, earlier IE versions or under a different operating system. However, we are currently working on a replacement for SVG, which should basically run everywhere. Expect an early version to be available before end 2007.
SVG Display Tests
If you don't see a green map of Mayo in the first box above, you need to download and install the SVG-Viewer plugin. Additionally try Adobe's own test web page, which also includes animations.
Plugin and Version Check
If the SVG test image displays correctly, verify that you have the right version by right clicking on the test image, (you might have to activate the plugin control first), selecting "About Adobe SVG-Viewer" and checking if says "3.03" at the top.
Download and Installation
You can install the SVG-Viewer in two ways: Immediate Installation or Installation After Saved Download. The first option is the quickest, but the second allows you to repeat an installation without another download.
Immediate Installation
-
Start the download procedure with opening Adobe's SVG-Viewer installation web page. (This link opens a new window.)
-
Scroll downwards until you see tables listing language and operation system combinations.
-
Click on the link with the right SVG-Viewer language / operating system combination for your PC.
-
In the opening dialogue click on the RUN button to start the download.
-
In the next dialogue, click again on the RUN button to start the installation.
-
Click the Refresh button in this webbrowser window. This should open a dialogue where you have to agree to the Adobe Software License Agreement for the SVG-Viewer. Accept it by clicking on the OK button.
-
The "SVG Test File" box above should now show the same green map as the box on the right hand side.
Installation After Saved Download
-
This option has a small downside: you must close all webbrowser windows - including this one - before you can attempt an SVG-Viewer installation with a save download file. Otherwise the installation program will raise an error. The download itself, however, shouldn't be problem. You'll will come across that moment, when you have to close all webbrowser windows, halfway through the following download and installation guide.
-
Start the download procedure with opening Adobe's SVG-Viewer installation web page. (This link opens a new window.)
-
Scroll downwards until you see tables listing language and operation system combinations.
-
Click on the link with the right SVG-Viewer language / operating system combination for your PC.
-
In the opening dialogue click on the SAVE button.
-
Choose a location for the installation file "SVGview.exe" in the next dialogue window.
-
Press the OK button to start the download.
-
After completion you will see another dialogue window where you can choose between running the installation file straight away or opening the download folder.
-
As mentioned at the beginning, you can not install Adobe's SVG-Viewer without closing all webbrowser windows first, which includes this one. So please study all the following steps before you proceed beyond this point.
-
Close all webbrowser windows.
-
Start the installation by either clicking the RUN button in the still open dialogue window or by opening the download folder and executing the installation file via double mouse-click.
-
Re-open this web page (or any other web page with SVG content).
-
After every installation a dialogue will appear where you have to agree once to Adobe Software License Agreement for the SVG-Viewer. Accept it by clicking on the OK button.
-
The "SVG Test File" box above should now show the same green map as the box on the right hand side.
-
In the future, when you might have to repeat the installation, you can skip the download and run the saved installation file directly.
Uninstall
The SVG-Viewer can be uninstalled in the usual way. Under Windows, open the Control Panel, choose "Add or Remove Programs", select "Adobe SVG Viewer" and click on the Change/Remove button.
Troubleshooting
If your SVG-Viewer doesn't operate properly although your system fulfills otherwise above mentioned requirements then please try to uninstall and download / re-install it as described.
