1838 Ordnance Survey Map of Mayo (1st. Edition, Six-Inch) Introduction

History

Mayo County Library is now providing online access to a wonderful collection of historic maps of County Mayo dating from 1838. The collection consists initially of 6 inch maps - the Mayo section of the first large scale mapping of an entire country in the world when it was completed in 1842. Acclaimed for their accuracy, these maps are regarded by cartographers as amongst the finest ever produced and include every road, track and even hedge across the country.

Details

Previously only available in hardcopy in Mayo's Central Library, Mayo Maps Online provides now online access to the first edition of the Ordnance Survey Maps, 1838. The maps are searchable by parish or townland and the database includes information on place names, census figures for each townland, and national monuments. They are visually beautiful and contain detailed information down to the level of individual houses and field boundaries and show all important historical and topographical features. The physical maps are fragile and irreplaceable and cannot be copied without damaging them. Providing digital copies online will prove of enormous benefit to those conducting local historical research.
