Historic sites in Shrule parish, from Irish Tourist Association Survey, 1945
In 1570 Shrule was the site of a battle between Sir Edward Fitton, President of Connaught and the Burkes. In 1641 an incident known as "The Massacre of Shrule" occurred, where a party of Protestants were attacked and many of them slaughtered.
