Description of antiquities in Mayo Abbey and Rosslee parishes from Irish Tourist Association Survey, 1945

The antiquities section of the survey for Mayo Abbey and Rosslee parishes is by far the most extensive, containing seven full sheets of information. There is a detailed description of the ruins of the abbey and a few pages devoted to its history including events leading up to its establishment by St.Colman and also notes on St.Gerald who replaced St. Colman as abbott.

Other sites of antiquarian interest include the following:

"Elitherea" in Rosslee, where St. Gerald is reputed to have established a convent

Ruins of Brize Castle, home of the Prendergast family

Castle remnants in Knockaunakill, said to be another Prendergast castle.

Castle Lucas, believed by some to have belonged to the de Burgo family

Megalithic structure in Ardcorkey, discovered by Dr. Murphy of Balla.

Protestant church ruins near the village of Mayo Abbey.
