The survey of Kiltane parish was carried out in 1943 by Conor O'Brien. The main attractions of the area from a tourism point of view were the scenery, beaches and the quality of the fishing and shooting. Public amenities were few, with the main centre being Bangor-Erris, a village of just 34 houses. Neither was the area rich in antiquities with just Kiltane Abbey deemed worthy of mention.
