amenities and general information for Killala parish, from Irish Tourist Association Survey, 1943
Killala is described by the surveyor as "now devoid of its oldtime commercial and industrial prosperity", one of the causes of this being improvements in the sea channel allowing boats to proceed as far as Ballina. The once-thriing fishing industry has also declined as has the linen industry. A number of derelict warehouses provide evidence of this prosperous past. Amenities listed in the survey include:
- Town hall
- Catholic, Church of Ireland and Methodist churches.
- Industries and crafts:- Mills at Palmerstown, cockle picking, collection of carrageen and spinning.
- Schools:- Killala Catholic and Protestant national schools and Templemary national school..
- Monthly fair and market.
