The Irish Tourist Association Survey, Killala parish was carried out by Conor O'Brien in 1943. The only town in the area is Killala itself, which, according to the surveyor, had a population of 449 at the time. The main tourist attractions in the area were numerous antiquities and the sporting activities of fishing and shooting. Public amenities were relatively meagre. Under two of the categories, the surveyor refers to the former prosperity of Killala based on its port, linen industry and fishing.
