Historic sites in Crossmolina parish, from Irish Tourist Association Survey, 1942
The initial entry under this heading for the survey of Crossmolina parish mentions that General Humbert passed through Crossmolina on his way to Castlebar in 1798. The old Deel bridge is recorded as being the site of the hanging of a local patriot named Walshe, also in 1798. However a subsequent note inserted in the survey corrects both of these statements. Apparently Humbert's army did not pass directly through Crossmolina village but kept to the old road along the shores of Lough Conn, passing within a mile of the village. Also the hanging referred to took place in Ballina. The surveyor received this information from Rev.Fr. Harte who in turn was informed by Rv. Dean Kelly, a native of the area.
