the parish of Crossboyne and Tagheen was surveyed by Donal Faughnan in 1945. The most extensive section of the survey is under the heading of "Mansions, Castles and Estates", which is devotes to a description of Castlemacgarrett Castle and estate and a detailed account of the history of the Browne family. A number of antiquities are listed but there are very few amenities, which is to be expected in a parish where the only village deemed worthy of inclusion, Crossboyne, had at the time of the survey a population of just 20.
