Notes on historic sites in Burrishoole Parish from Irish Tourist Association Survey, 1942
Tír an Áir or Tirenar is the main historical site included in this section of the survey. It is supposedly named after fierce battles involving the Fianna in the first and second centuries A.D.
Historical figures buried , or reputed to be buried, at Burrishoole Abbey include Cúcoigruigheach Ó Cléirigh ( Peregrine O’Cleary ), one of the Four Masters, Fr. Manus MacSweeney and Austin O’Malley, both associated with the 1798 rebellion.
