Description of antiquities in Burriscarra and Ballintober from Irish Tourist Association Survey, 1945
The parishes of Burriscarra and Ballintober are rich in the area of antiquities, especially the number of buildings of historical interest. These include the following:
Castlecarra: built by the Staunton family who also owned Castlebourke and Kanturk Castle in Ballyheane. A detailed description of the building is provided by the surveyor and an outline of its history.
Ballintober (Ballintubber) Abbey: There is a very detailed description of the architectural features of the building accompanied by sketches. The history of the building is traced from its founding in 1216
Burriscarra Abbey: Detailed description of the building with sketch and outline of its history. Believed to have been built by the Staunton family
Castlebourke: Again, detailed description of the building accompanied by sketches. Was owned by the Staunton family and passed eventually to Theobald Burke, son of Granuaile and popularly known as “Tibot na Long” A lengthier discussion of Tibot na Long can be found in the section on Historic Sites -see links below.
Other buildings and antiquities listed in this section are Ballyburke Castle, Castle Island in Lough Carra, church ruins at Burriscarra, Balybourke, Cogaula and Church Island and famine graves at Tawnagry and Kilavalley.
