Antiquities in Aghamore parish, from Irish Tourist Association Survey, 1944

This is the most substantial section of the survey of Aghamore parish with an impressive number of antiquities listed, some with detailed architectural descriptions. They are as follows:

  • Raith Castle:- a detailed description of the ruins of this castle is provided. Not much is known of the history of the castle. It was said to have been built in 1263 by Philip, the son of Costello. Also known as “Raith na gCupán”.
  • Church ruins at Aghamore:-again the surveyor gives a detailed description of the ruins. Nothing known of the history apart from the tradition locally that this was originally a patrician site
  • Ancient cross in field beside ruins of church in Aghamore
  • Diseart Biper:- Located in Crossbeg townland. Ruins just a mound of stones. Said to have been a Dominican foundation from the 12th century.
  • Mannin Castle:- detailed description of ruins and once more, nothing known of history
  • Derrymeel Fort in the townland of Doogary
  • Cashel remnants in Cashel townland
